Authored by Ed Loveday (ex Bar Brosé, ACME, The Passage) and Adriana Picker, a commercial illustrator with a lifelong passion for botanical and food illustration, ‘The Cocktail Garden, Botanical Cocktails For Every Season’ is on trend for embracing seasonality.
The ornate cover design hints at the contents with over 80 cocktail recipes grouped by the seasons and based on seasonal botanicals and produce.
A section on essential bar tools, an explainer on syrups, infusions, purées and tinctures and a glossary of spirits and mixers act as book ends to the botanical-inspired recipes. The cocktails have a classic base and have been given a botanical twist. Think Kale and Ginger Margarita, Pear and Green Tea Bellini, Spiced Pumpkin Sour, Kaffir Gimlet, Grapefruit Americano, and a Mediterranean G&T.
The book appeals equally to the seasoned home bartender and the cocktail novice. While the recipes shy away from a long list of 10+ ingredients or advanced cocktail techniques, a more advanced section has simple to follow instructions for making syrups and purees, making it ideal to serve for party guests when entertaining at home.
While the botanicals illustrations are aesthetically pleasing, it would have been more useful to include cocktail illustrations to accompany the recipes. But don’t let that be a deterring factor. The book will take you from hot summer afternoon libations and spicy autumn delights to comforting winter drinks to enjoy by the fireside. Simply choose your season and you’ll be mixing delicious drinks in no time.
